Course Title: The Slow Transition Toward Green Steel

Course Description: Steel is one of the most widely used materials in construction of the built environment and yet is one of the least green and is responsible for high levels of embodied carbon. In this course we will explore both traditional and green iron ore mining, manufacturing, production, and transport. We will discuss the slow transition from fossil-fuel usage in these processes to fully renewable, scalable models and identify strategies to overcome the barriers to transition to lower carbon or becoming carbon neutral.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand common ore mining, steel production, and transport practices and what is being done and proposed to reduce embodied carbon and climate impacts.
  2. Understand the impacts and implications of “business as usual” versus “green” iron ore mining, production, transport
  3. Learn about the barriers preventing companies from transitioning to green steel; what are the economic requirements and implications for that transition – what strategies can be employed to switch to a fully green, scalable supply chain
  4. Learn how the recycling of steel reduces the embodied carbon impact on climate, the environment, and projects as well as the different transition models toward green steel such as utilizing natural gas as an intermediate solution, and employing hydrogen power to address embodied carbon in the production life cycle of steel.
