Description:
Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world and is responsible for 6-10% of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions – primarily from its key binding agent cement. In this presentation and discussion we will explore available materials and design strategies that can be implemented to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint and learn about emerging technologies aimed at eliminating concrete’s carbon emissions altogether.
Drew Fagent, SE, Principal, ZFA Structural Engineers
Drew is a graduate of UCLA and a licensed structural engineer in California and Hawaii. Since joining ZFA’s Santa Rosa office in 2012, Drew has enjoyed serving various local sectors, including hospitality, industrial, and residential, with extensive experience in multi-story light-frame podium structures. Understanding the common challenges faced in single and multi-family projects, Drew has contributed to ZFA’s growing knowledge and experience in emerging technologies such as carbon capturing concrete, mass timber, panelized wall systems, and volumetric modular construction on projects often aimed at meeting the community’s urgent housing needs and sustainable design priorities.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will learn about the basics of embodied carbon in concrete.
- Attendees will learn about available carbon-reducing concrete materials.
- Attendees will learn about and be able to discuss potential carbon-reducing concrete design strategies.
- Attendees will learn about emerging carbon-free and carbon capturing concrete technologies.
