The AIA RE Committee on the Environment (COTE) presents the first of our Embodied Carbon Webinar Series – monthly webinars covering different materials and topics over the next six months.
Course Title: Performance-Based Specifications for Embodied Carbon Reductions
Course Description: Specifications are a valuable tool for embodied carbon reduction that can bring about quick wins in designing for a low-carbon or net-zero building. Because the industry’s attention to embodied carbon is new, many examples of embodied carbon specifications do not yet exist. Thornton Tomasetti, long-time participant in the Carbon Leadership Forum, was early to develop specifications for concrete, steel, and timber. In this session, the considerations and challenges that the firm experienced will be shared to help others in defining and using specifications.
Course / Learning Objectives
- Describe the main considerations in concrete, steel, and timber specifications for reducing embodied carbon
- Implement EC reduction strategies beyond specifications
- Avoid and overcome challenges when employing EC specifications
- Questions that persist for each material that require industry attention and research
