very\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\nSummary:\n\nThe 2023 Maui wildfires devastated Lah
aina and tested the architecture community's ability to respond fast\, equ

chitects can serve their communities before\, during\, and after disaster
strikes. From emergency temporary housing to permanent affordable rebuildi
ng\, the work raises urgent questions relevant to every community on the w
ildfire frontier. Featured case studies include Ohana Hope Village (off-gr
id design for speed and economy)\, Sacred Hearts School (adaptive reuse)\,
and a Habitat for Humanity Mass Timber Bunkhouse rethinking affordable ho
 using after disaster.\nDate: Thursday\, May 7\n\nTime: 6:00 - 8:30 pm\n\

architectural journey began while working on commercial fishing boats in
Alaska\, serving as a ship’s engineer to finance his undergraduate studi
es at Texas A&amp\;M University. This hands-on experience gave him a deep
understanding of battery systems\, potable and wastewater systems\, and ge
nerators. He later earned a master’s degree in architecture\, Urbanism\,
and Building Science from the Technical University Delft in the Netherlan
ds. After living abroad for a decade\, David returned to the United States
and joined The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii\, where he served as Operatio
ns Manager and Interim Director of the Palmyra Atoll program. In this role
\, he managed a world-renowned research station and led the Palmyra Renewa
ble Energy Project\, transitioning the station from diesel generators to a
renewable microgrid—saving over one million dollars annually and freein
g funds for conservation and research.\n\nIn 2015\, David co-founded Hawai
i Off-Grid Architecture &amp\; Engineering (HIOG) with architect Rick McGo
vern and civil engineer Jacob Freeman. Building on McGovern’s establishe
d practice\, HIOG evolved into a pioneering architectural firm focused on
sustainable and resilient design. As President of AIA Maui in 2024\, David
played a key role in Maui wildfire recovery efforts\, partnering with the
Mayor’s Office of Recovery and serving as a county-deputized safety ass
essor for damaged structures within the burn zone. He also leads the desig
 n of ‘Ohana Hope Village\, a mid-term housing project providing relief f
or displaced Lahaina residents.\n\nDavid serves on the Board of Directors
for Habitat for Humanity Maui\, where he champions innovative construction
materials and methods. He has been a driving force behind introducing mas
s timber solutions to the Hawaiian Islands\, incorporating this sustainabl
e technology into new residential projects and other developments.\n\n\n
