Sustainable Design with Redwood Timbers by Humboldt Redwood – 1 LU/HSW

This course provides evidence that Redwood Timbers are a safe, strong, and sustainable option for exterior and interior building projects where natural wood is desired. This course also provides information about Redwood’s insulation properties and Class B flame spread, as well as details about modern Redwood forestry management practices.

Charles (Charlie) grew up in Massachusetts. He attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he graduated in 1980 with B.S. degrees in both Forestry and Wood Science and Technology. In 1982 Charlie graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington with a M.S. in Forest Science with an emphasis on wood quality. Post-graduate work at Texas A&M University involved research in forest genetics. In 1985 he took a position with the University of California, Berkeley, Forest Products Laboratory where he conducted research on the performance of building materials in wood structures. In 1988 he accepted a position as Supervisor of Technical Services with the California Redwood Association (CRA). In 2006 he was appointed President of the CRA. He was appointed to the American Lumber Standard Committee in 1990 by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and serves as Chairman of the ALSC Enforcement Subcommittee. He is active in many lumber industry trade associations such as the American Wood Council, Forest Products Society and American Society for Testing and Materials. Charlie joined Mendocino Forest Products as Manager, Business Development in 2017. He lives in Pleasant Hill, CA with his family.
