No tree uprooted for a building and no stone taken from the mountain is restored to us. […] It is our duty to attempt - to continue - the construction of Beauty.”
- Alvaro Siza
The design is rooted in the dynamic interplay between nature and the built environment. A podium takes the place of a natural terrace, housing the project while simultaneously offering it into the surrounding hill.
A modest facade makes use of the foliage and the natural slope to hide the open courtyard. Straight lined geometry and overlaid diagonals carve a dintinctively human space within the enveloping trees. Spare white walls of the rooms and untreated weather wood siding break down barriers between interior and exterior.
The courtyard spills into the woods allowing the mind and the body to experience the progression from architecture to nature and from nature to architecture.
