Evoking the sweeping curve of a swan’s wing, this reimagined portal embraces and welcomes each visitor
to the winery caves. Originally one structurally-unsound cave entrance, the new structure was built out to
stabilize the earth. A second cave entrance was added to connect a new tunnel to the new production winery. The siting of the retaining walls minimized the disruption of the existing grade while embracing the overarching design concept for the project.
Finish materials evoke the winery served by the portal. Shotcrete walls match the color of the production winery
retaining walls; a perforated metal screen and lighting feature reference the sliding screens at the winery crush pad.
The perforated metal screen at the entrance both performs and delights. The screen is back-lit to glow in the evening, and the perforations allow for ventilation of the tunnels.
